Take the negative wire from the voltmeter and make a good connection on a grounded screw in the car. Keeping an eye on the voltmeter in your car will tell you whether or not the alternator is bad.

Install a 1 amp fast-acting fuse to the red automotive voltmeter hookup of the voltmeter before connecting to the volt terminal. Start your engine and check your connections for hot spots with a multimeter. Disconnect your negative battery cable again and switch the wires on the back of the meter if the indicator reads positive.
